Chapter 23

1 And it came1961 to pass a long7227 time3117 after310 that the LORD3068 had given rest5117 to Israel3478 from all3605 their enemies341 round5439 about, that Joshua3091 waxed old2204 and stricken935 in age.3117

2 And Joshua3091 called7121 for all3605 Israel,3478 and for their elders,2205 and for their heads,7218 and for their judges,8199 and for their officers,7860 and said559 to them, I am old2204 and stricken935 in age:3117

3 And you have seen7200 all3605 that the LORD3068 your God430 has done6213 to all3605 these428 nations1471 because6440 of you; for the LORD3068 your God430 is he that has fought3898 for you.

4 Behold,7200 I have divided5307 to you by lot these428 nations1471 that remain,7604 to be an inheritance5159 for your tribes,7626 from Jordan,3383 with all3605 the nations1471 that I have cut3772 off, even to the great1419 sea3220 westward.3996 8121

5 And the LORD3068 your God,430 he shall expel1920 them from before6440 you, and drive3423 them from out of your sight;6440 and you shall possess3423 their land,776 as the LORD3068 your God430 has promised1696 to you.

6 Be you therefore very3966 courageous2388 to keep8104 and to do6213 all3605 that is written3789 in the book5612 of the law8451 of Moses,4872 that you turn5493 not aside therefrom to the right3225 hand3225 or to the left;8040

7 That you come935 not among these428 nations,1471 these428 that remain7604 among you; neither3808 make mention2142 of the name8034 of their gods,430 nor3808 cause to swear7650 by them, neither3808 serve5647 them, nor3808 bow7812 yourselves to them:

8 But hold1692 to the LORD3068 your God,430 as you have done6213 to this2088 day.3117

9 For the LORD3068 has driven3423 out from before6440 you great1419 nations1471 and strong:6099 but as for you, no3808 man376 has been able5975 to stand5975 before6440 you to this2088 day.3117

10 One259 man376 of you shall chase7291 a thousand:505 for the LORD3068 your God,430 he it is that fights3898 for you, as he has promised1696 you.

11 Take good3966 heed8104 therefore to yourselves,5315 that you love157 the LORD3068 your God.430

12 Else3588 if518 you do in any wise go7725 back,7725 and join1692 to the remnant3499 of these428 nations,1471 even these428 that remain7604 among854 you, and shall make marriages2859 with them, and go935 in to them, and they to you:

13 Know3045 for a certainty that the LORD3068 your God430 will no3808 more3254 drive3423 out any of these428 nations1471 from before6440 you; but they shall be snares6341 and traps4170 to you, and scourges7850 in your sides,6654 and thorns6796 in your eyes,5869 until5704 you perish6 from off5921 this2063 good2896 land127 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 has given5414 you.

14 And, behold,2009 this day3117 I am going1980 the way1870 of all3605 the earth:776 and you know3045 in all3605 your hearts3824 and in all3605 your souls,5315 that not one259 thing1697 has failed5307 of all3605 the good2896 things1697 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 spoke1696 concerning5921 you; all3605 are come935 to pass to you, and not one259 thing1697 has failed5307 thereof.

15 Therefore it shall come1961 to pass, that as all3605 good2896 things1697 are come935 on you, which834 the LORD3068 your God430 promised1696 you; so3651 shall the LORD3068 bring935 on you all3605 evil7451 things,1697 until5704 he have destroyed8045 you from off5921 this2063 good2896 land127 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 has given5414 you.

16 When you have transgressed5674 the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 your God,430 which834 he commanded6680 you, and have gone1980 and served5647 other312 gods,430 and bowed7812 yourselves to them; then shall the anger639 of the LORD3068 be kindled2734 against you, and you shall perish6 quickly4120 from off5921 the good2896 land776 which834 he has given5414 to you.

1 AND it came to pass after a long time, when the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua was old, and well advanced in years.

2 And Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders, their heads, their judges, and their scribes, and said to them, I am old and well advanced in years;

3 And you have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations, which he destroyed from before you; for it is the LORD your God who has fought for you.

4 Behold, I have not divided to you the land of these nations that remain, in the inheritance of your tribes; but from the Jordan, all the nations that I have destroyed, even to the Great Sea westward, have I divided among you.

5 The LORD your God will defeat them, and destroy them from before you; and you shall possess their land, as the LORD your God has promised you.

6 Only be strong to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, the servant of God, and not turn aside from it, neither to the right hand nor to the left;

7 And you shall not mix with these nations that remain among you; neither make mention of the names of their gods, nor swear by them, neither serve them, nor worship them;

8 But cleave to the LORD your God, as you have done even to this day.

9 For the LORD has destroyed from before you great and strong nations; and no man has been able to stand against you to this day.

10 One man of you shall chase a thousand; for the LORD your God is with you, he it is who fights for you, as he has promised you.

11 Take good heed therefore to yourselves, to revere the LORD your God.

12 For if you ever turn back and join the remnant of these nations that remain among you and make marriages with them and mix with them and they with you;

13 Then know for sure that the LORD your God will no more destroy these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps to you, and spears in your sides and fishhooks in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you.

14 And as for me, I am now going the way of all the earth; and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good promises which the LORD your God spoke concerning you; all have come to pass to you, and not one thing has failed.

15 Therefore, just as all the good things have come upon you which the LORD your God promised, so shall come upon you all the curses, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you;

16 If you should transgress against the covenant of the LORD your God and against the commandments which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and worship them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land which he has given you.

15 Therefore it shall come1961 to pass, that as all3605 good2896 things1697 are come935 on you, which834 the LORD3068 your God430 promised1696 you; so3651 shall the LORD3068 bring935 on you all3605 evil7451 things,1697 until5704 he have destroyed8045 you from off5921 this2063 good2896 land127 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 has given5414 you.

15 Therefore, just as all the good things have come upon you which the LORD your God promised, so shall come upon you all the curses, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you;
